GED organized a seminar on “Examining the causes of Rice Price Hikes and Its Impact on Food Security and Macroeconomic Stability”. Dr. M. Asaduzzaman, former Research Director of BIDS made a presentation on the keynote paper. Dr. KAS Murshid, former Director General of BIDS and Professor Jahangir Alam, Professor, Bangladesh Agricultural University were the designated discussants. It is to be noted that rice prices have been stubbornly increasing in the last few months despite good harvest and adequate imports and rice prices have been contributing significantly to food inflation buildup and so to headline inflation. In this context, GED made an attempt to conduct an in-depth analysis on the rice price hikes. Today’s workshop/seminar is a part of developing a policy brief on the topic to guide policymakers to take necessary remedies. Today’s discussion highlighted the fact that the rice market and the factors affecting rice prices are multifaceted and complex in nature. However, one should look into the issues, such as changes of harvesting pattern, relative prices of non-rice food items, cross-boarder rice price pattern, structural issues, public food distribution system, etc. to get greater insights into rice prices hike.
